Udi Udi Jaye: India’s First Female Naval Pilot Inducted

Reading headlines with phrases like, “First Ever Indian Woman To…” is probably on the top of the list of headings I immediately click on in the news and get pumped to write about for Indians 4 Social Change. Fortunately, India gave me one (of many in recent years) just a few days ago by inducting the nation’s first female naval pilot, Shubhangi Swaroop. She quotes,

“I know, this is not just an exciting opportunity but a great responsibility also.”

In addition to the first female naval pilot, several female naval officers were hired as well. While these achievements are without a doubt a reason to celebrate, the nation has a long way to go given only 27% of Indian women are employed.

Nonetheless, this is a great step for the women’s rights movement, and we can’t wait to see what else Indian women achieve in the coming weeks, months, and years!
